The brand-new Polestar 4 is on the market: here’s what you need to know

The Polestar 4, first unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2023, is positioned as the fastest model in the brand's lineup. It offers a choice between single and dual electric motors and showcases a coupe-like design. Positioned between the hatchback Polestar 2 and the upcoming SUV Polestar 3, set to arrive in the UK later this year, the Polestar 4 aims to strike a balance in the brand's vehicle range.

Polestar, a Swedish manufacturer owned by Volvo, has evolved into a standalone brand with a primary focus on electric cars. The brand debuted with the Polestar 1 in October 2017, which has since been discontinued. Currently, the UK market has access to the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3, with the newly released Polestar 4 hitting the market on January 31, 2024.

Polestar 4: Design and Dimensions

The 4 has the dimensions of 190.5 inches in length, 84.2 inches (including mirrors) and 60.8 inches in height. The Polestar 4 is larger than the Polestar 2, but the 3 is still bigger.

The Polestar 4 is 190 inches long and 60.8 inches in height.

The Polestar 4 boasts a sleek and contemporary appearance. At the front, it showcases sharp angles, dual headlights, and a sizable grille. The front camera is seamlessly integrated into the grille, positioned just below a subtle lip in the design.

When viewed from the side, the car adopts a sloping roof design, distinguishing itself from the Polestar 3 SUV. Buyers have the option to select wheels ranging from 20 to 22 inches and can choose between Michelin or Pirelli tyres. Moving to the back, the car features a rear light that spans the entire width and angles down on each side. Additionally, a black lower trim detail enhances the sporty aesthetic of the rear design.

The Polestar 4 is available in 6 different colours: snow, magnesium, electron, storm, space and gold. You can also choose between black and gold cladding. There are 4 different wheels you can choose from: 22” performance, 20” aero, 21” sport and 21” pro.

In the Polestar 4, there's a unique feature that might stir some debate - instead of a traditional rear mirror, there's a glass roof extending over the rear seat area. Don't worry, though; there's a digital rear-view mirror for the driver to see what's happening behind. This unconventional setup is designed to enhance visibility. Surprisingly, the cameras provide a broad 120-degree view, even more extensive than a typical window and mirror combo. Plus, you won't have to fret about dirt, rain, or snow blocking the view, as the camera system is dustproof, waterproof, and well-ventilated.

There is no rear-view mirror in the Polestar 4 - instead cameras do all of the work

Controversially, the Polestar 4 doesn’t have a rear mirror. Instead it uses cameras to provide a digital rear-view mirror which gives the driver everything they need.

The display is sharp and responsive, with minimal delay. You can customise the vertical angle and brightness to your preference. Interestingly, this unique rear-view setup is also featured in the Polestar 5.

Polestar 4: Performance

The Polestar 4 stands out as the fastest model in the Polestar lineup. The Performance version, equipped with a dual-motor system, generates an impressive 544hp and 686Nm of torque. This powerhouse allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just 3.8 seconds, reaching a top speed of 124mph.

On the other hand, the single-motor version packs 272hp and 343Nm of torque. While its acceleration from 0 to 60mph takes a slightly longer 7.2 seconds, it still achieves a respectable top speed of 112mph.

Polestar 4: Battery Range

The Polestar 4 Long Range Dual Motor is equipped with a 102kWh battery, with a usable capacity of 94kWh. This version is estimated to have a range of 285 miles on a fully charged battery. Charging is done using a Type 2 connector, and the onboard charger has a maximum power of 22kW, enabling a full charge in approximately 5 hours and 15 minutes when starting with an empty battery. However, when charging at home, where the maximum charging power is typically 7.4kW, the charge time extends to around 15 hours.

The Polestar 4 Long Range Single Motor is equipped with a 102kWh battery, with a usable capacity of 94kWh - the same as the Dual Motor version. Charging procedures remain consistent for both the Single Motor and Dual Motor variants. However, utilising a rapid charger provides a slight advantage for the Single Motor, delivering 210 miles of range compared to the Dual Motor's 195 miles within the same charging timeframe.

Polestar 4: Interior

Polestar claims to “draw inspiration from fashion and sportswear” as it pairs “tactile made-to-fit performance fabrics with integrated lighting to create an enveloping yet spacious interior.” You can choose from five different themes for the interior, each designed around specific materials and colours. These include:

  • Zinc Nappa leather with Charcoal deco

  • Charcoal Nappa leather with Charcoal deco

  • Mist-tailored knit with Zinc deco

  • Charcoal Microtech with Charcoal deco

  • Charcoal Microtech with Zinc

All of the upholstery is made from environmentally conscious materials. Taking inspiration from the footwear industry, all interior fabric is knitted to fit using yarn made from 100% recycled PET bottles. As mentioned above, Nappa leather is available - this brand adheres to strict animal welfare and quality standards. Both of these are available in the Polestar 4 as an upgrade.

Stepping inside, the interior exudes a spacious and airy feel, courtesy of the full-length glass roof. This roof can be equipped with an option electrochromic film which adds a layer of liquid crystals to the glass of the panoramic roof to reduce glare. You can activate this via the centre display and it means the glass can turn from opaque to transparent, reflecting light or allowing it to pass through.

Seating

You can adjust seating in the front up to 8 ways and you have electric recliner seats in the rear. The Polestar 4 has been designed with a focus on ergonomics, providing optimal comfort and support no matter the length of your journey.

The front seats of the Polestar 4 offer a massage function, featuring wave, upper back, lumbar, and spot massage settings for both seats. Each seat comes with individual controls and three intensity levels per mode, ensuring a personalised and comfortable experience. Front seat ventilation, circulating air through the perforated leather upholstery, provides a refreshing break from the heat on warmer days, complemented by the heating function for colder weather. Convenience is taken to the next level with the car's ability to accommodate multiple drivers seamlessly. The Polestar 4 automatically stores the preferred seating position for up to 6 drivers. Upon detecting an authorized key or smartphone, the car effortlessly adjusts to the right settings, allowing for a shared driving experience without the hassle of constant seat adjustments.

In the rear of the Polestar 4, passengers can enjoy a heightened level of comfort with the ability to recline their seats. The upgraded rear headrests and heating features further contribute to ensuring a pleasant experience for passengers. It is important to note, that all of the above are add-ons and are available as an upgrade.

Space

The Polestar 4 provides all the storage space needed for everyday life. The front central armrest reveals a generously sized storage compartment beneath. While the roofline in the back has the potential to affect headspace, reviews assure that there is ample room. Rear passengers also enjoy the convenience of a dedicated screen for climate control.

Practicality is not compromised, as the Polestar 4 provides 500 litres of boot space. Additionally, there is a useful 15 litres of storage space under the bonnet, perfect for stowing charging cables.

Polestar 4: Infotainment

The infotainment system is powered by Android Automotive OS and it has a 15.4-inch landscape-oriented screen. It has built-in Google, meaning Google Assistant, Maps and Play are all readily available, meaning it automatically becomes part of the driver’s digital ecosystem. Google Assistant allows the driver to control the music, climate settings and other functions by simply saying “Hey Google.” You can also check your car’s battery level from your home because of Google Home integration; remote actions allow the driver to control vehicle functions and smart home devices from anywhere. Apple Car Play is also available - fear not!

The car’s purchase price includes the first three years of data use.

Driver displays include a 10.2-inch driver display which shows the most important information like speed, navigation directions and battery status. It has three different viewing modes, each configured to avoid clutter and distraction.

There is also a head-up display which helps the driver stay focussed on the road - this displays projects speed, navigation and call notifications all on the windscreen. It also automatically adapts to lighting and has a snow mode for better visibility in winter weather.
