Your guide to the best small electric cars

Over the past few years, there has been significant discourse surrounding the increasing size of cars. Various prominent UK newspapers in 2023 have engaged in discussions addressing this matter. Notably, the Telegraph published an article titled "Britain’s roads can’t keep up with our massive cars," shedding light on the issue. Similarly, a BBC article highlighted that 150 car models are now too big for standard UK parking spaces. This trend has been coined as "autobesity," symbolising the phenomenon of cars becoming excessively large.

This graph shows an increase from 1.3 million new SUVs purchased in 2010 to 4.5 million in 2021. Ultimately showing that there has been a substantial rise in the number of larger cars on the road.

Jerome Micheron, Senior Vice President of Peugeot Products, spoke with the Telegraph and expects cars to get smaller because EVs do not need bulky internal combustion engines (ICEs). He emphasised that the batteries used in EVs will get smaller as technology advances. Manufacturers will face the challenge of reducing the vehicles’ size while still being able to offer increased range and capacity.

Our focus is on examining the performance of small electric cars, both past and future while highlighting the top small electric car models at the moment. We also list the best small electric cars you can salary sacrifice at The Electric Car Scheme now.

A brief history into an iconic small car: the Mini

When considering small cars, the MINI stands out prominently. Praised for its exceptional design, compact size, easy parking, quality, and outstanding safety, MINIs are ideal for city driving. The aim behind the MINI was to create a small, fuel-efficient car capable of accommodating four adults and accessible to everyone economically. This goal emerged in response to the Suez Crisis, which triggered fuel price hikes, prompting reconsideration of the practicality of larger vehicles.

By 1969, over 2 million Minis had been sold worldwide, soaring to 4 million by 1977. Its acclaim reached new heights when it was honoured as the "European Car of the Century" in 1999, trailing only Ford’s Model T in global votes.

The MINI represents the adoration for small, cost-effective cars that efficiently navigate from point A to B. Its resurgence in the electric car market is noteworthy, with the Electric Mini witnessing a 14.3% surge in sales from 2021 to 2022, constituting 21% of all global Mini sales.
